The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its final report into the in-flight separation of a cabin exit door plug on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9.
On January 5, 2024, Alaska Airlines flight 1282, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, faced a serious incident shortly after departing from Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon.
While climbing through 14,830 feet, the left mid exit door (MED) plug suddenly detached from the aircraft. The detachment of the large, rectangular structure measuring about 29 inches wide and 59 inches high, caused rapid depressurization.
The flight crew and cabin team quickly followed emergency procedures, safely returning the plane to PDX.
One flight attendant and seven passengers sustained minor injuries. Meanwhile, the captain, first officer, three other flight attendants, and 164 passengers were unharmed.
However, the aircraft suffered significant damage.
What Happened During the Incident?
The detachment of the left MED plug left a gaping hole in the aircraft’s fuselage. The surrounding frame, including fittings and assemblies connected to the plug, was damaged.
