Korean Air Unveils New Branding and Aircraft Livery

Korean Air has embarked on a significant transformation, revealing a refreshed corporate identity that blends its rich heritage with a forward-looking vision.

This week, the Korean flag carrier unveiled a modernized version of its iconic Taegeuk symbol, marking a pivotal moment in its 41-year history.

A ceremony, dubbed “Rising Night,” took place at the airline’s Seoul headquarters hangar, drawing a crowd of 1,000 guests, including employees, industry leaders, and media representatives.

It marks the first logo change for the airline in just over 4 decades. A new aircraft livery was also showcased in unison with the unveiling.

New Icon and Aircraft Livery

The heart of this rebranding lies in the redesigned deep blue Taegeuk symbol. This symbol was prominently displayed during the event. It serves as a powerful reminder of Korean Air’s legacy while embracing contemporary design principles.

The modernized logo aligns with global minimalist branding trends. It thus ensures the airline remains relevant and visually appealing in today’s dynamic market.

Accompanying the Taegeuk symbol is the refined “KOREAN AIR” logotype. This element blends national prestige with a sophisticated visual identity.

The subtle brushstroke-inspired details, smooth curves, and open connections offer a modern interpretation of Korean elegance. It adds a touch of artistry to the brand.

Korean Air also revealed its stunning new aircraft livery. As the curtains lifted, a Boeing 787-10, registered as HL8515, took center stage. The Dreamliner featured the airline’s latest Prestige Suites 2.0 cabin interiors.

This aircraft then commenced operations on 12 March with a flight from Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita. It embodies the airline’s commitment to passenger comfort and innovation.

The new livery features a bold “KOREAN” logotype, solidifying its position as South Korea’s flagship carrier. The enlarged logo and symbol create a powerful visual impact while maintaining a harmonious balance.

While the signature sky-blue color remains, Korean Air has introduced a newly developed metallic paint to enhance its premium image.

Korean Air replaced the traditional cheatline with a smooth, flowing curve across the fuselage. This results in a more refined and contemporary aesthetic.

Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Hanjin Group and Korean Air, articulated his vision for the airline’s future during his address. He emphasized that Korean Air’s mission extends beyond transportation, aiming to connect people, cultures, and the world.

He highlighted the airline’s commitment to building an industry-leading safety system, enhancing the customer experience, and fostering trust through open communication with all stakeholders.

With the impending integration of Asiana Airlines, Korean Air’s role as Korea’s flagship carrier has become even more significant.

Mr. Cho stressed the importance of combining expertise, refining strengths, and uniting cultures to create an unparalleled airline experience.

First Logo Change in 41 Years

This logo change, the first in 41 years, honors the legacy of the Taegeuk symbol. The new branding includes three variations: the full logo with the Taegeuk symbol and “KOREAN AIR,” a simplified “KOREAN” version, and a standalone Taegeuk symbol option.

To ensure brand consistency, Korean Air has introduced a 3D motif inspired by the Taegeuk’s flowing curves.

This motif, featuring the airline’s signature light blue with red accents, will appear on key customer touchpoints such as check-in screens, mobile SKYPASS cards, and the website.

Additionally, 2D patterns, inspired by Korean landscapes, Taegeuk curves, and traditional “Jogakbo” patchwork, will be used on textiles and printed materials.

Korean Air has also developed a proprietary typeface and iconography, reflecting the logotype’s design elements. These new visual assets will be gradually implemented across airport facilities, lounges, and inflight environments.

Conclusion

The new corporate identity will be rolled out across aircraft liveries, inflight services, and key customer interaction points.

This phased approach ensures a smooth transition and allows passengers to gradually experience the refreshed brand.

With this bold new look, Korean Air is poised to soar to new heights, connecting the world with its distinctive blend of tradition and modernity.
