The WestJet Group has reached a major milestone this week by successfully completing the integration of Sunwing Airlines.
This achievement, finalized on May 28, 2025, marks two years of dedicated effort, strategic planning, and teamwork.
The integration reflects WestJet’s commitment to enhancing value and connectivity for Canadian travelers, strengthening the nation’s travel industry.
“This is a proud moment for us,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, CEO of the WestJet Group. “Merging two airlines in just two years—first Swoop in 2024 and now Sunwing—was no small feat.”
“It required seamless coordination across operations, regulations, labor, and culture. This milestone showcases our team’s unity and dedication. It’s a win for WestJet, our guests, and Canadian aviation.”
Targeting the Leisure Travel Market
WestJet acquired Sunwing in May 2023, setting the stage for combining two iconic Canadian travel brands. The aim was to lead the market in affordable sun and leisure travel.
This integration aligns with WestJet’s strategy to offer competitive travel options, deliver greater value, and meet the evolving needs of Canadians in the leisure market.
The integration brings all jet aircraft under a single Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This includes 16 former Swoop aircraft, nine from the now-defunct Lynx Air, and 18 from Sunwing Airlines.
By unifying its narrowbody fleet, WestJet is streamlining operations. Throughout 2025, the airline will reconfigure these aircraft to feature a consistent WestJet interior, ensuring a cohesive onboard experience.
Travelers can look forward to a more diverse range of seating options, including Premium, Economy, Extended Comfort, and UltraBasic, across WestJet’s 150 Boeing 737 aircraft.
This expanded “cabin optionality” allows passengers to choose products and price points that suit their preferences without sacrificing access to WestJet’s extensive network. Whether travelers prioritize comfort or budget, WestJet’s flexible offerings cater to diverse needs.

Streamlined Booking via Sunwing Vacations
For those booking through Sunwing Vacations—Canada’s top vacation provider—the integration promises a smoother end-to-end experience.
Sunwing Vacations, along with its tour operator businesses, remains a key part of the WestJet Group. Streamlined booking processes and enhanced services will make planning vacations easier and more enjoyable for guests.
Reflecting on the milestone, von Hoensbroech acknowledged Sunwing’s lasting impact. “The final Sunwing-operated flight this week is a moment to pause and celebrate,” he said.
“Sunwing has been a cornerstone of Canadian leisure travel. Every employee, past and present, has helped shape the future of air travel. To all WestJetters and former Sunwing team members: thank you. This achievement belongs to you.”

Conclusion
This integration not only strengthens WestJet’s position in the leisure travel market but also sets a new standard for Canadian aviation.
By combining operations, standardizing aircraft, and enhancing guest experiences, WestJet is delivering on its promise of affordability, choice, and reliability.
As the airline continues to evolve, Canadians can expect more opportunities to explore sunseeker destinations with ease.
