On June 27, Shannon Airport witnessed a historic moment as a Pan American World Airways-branded jet took off from its runway for the first time in over 30 years.
The flight, heading to JFK International Airport in New York, marked the grand finale of “Tracing the Transatlantic,” a 12-day journey celebrating Pan Am’s legendary legacy. The aircraft was a Boeing 757-23N, registered TF-FIC.

This unique trip revived the glamour of the “Golden Age of Travel,” offering 50 passengers an all-business class experience along Pan Am’s iconic transatlantic routes.
The carefully crafted itinerary included stops in Bermuda, Lisbon, Marseille, London, and Shannon. Passengers savoured a farewell Irish coffee reception at Shannon Airport before boarding, a warm nod to Irish hospitality.
Onboard, flight attendants donned authentic recreations of classic Pan Am uniforms, enhancing the retro charm of the journey.
The experience, organized by Bartelings and Criterion Travel under official license from Pan American World Airways, blended luxury with nostalgia.
Shannon Airport: History with Pan Am
Shannon Airport’s connection to Pan Am runs deep. In September 1945, a Pan Am DC-4 landed at Shannon, completing the first transatlantic proving flight.
Just one month later, the airport hosted the first scheduled transatlantic commercial passenger flight. This October marks the 80th anniversary of that milestone.
Another historic moment came in August 1970, when Shannon welcomed its first scheduled jumbo jet. The aircraft was a Pan Am Boeing 747 carrying over 300 passengers.
