This iconic aircraft will take center stage at Boeing Plaza during the 72nd annual fly-in convention, held July 21-27 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
The aircraft’s appearance celebrates Pratt & Whitney’s 100th anniversary, marking a century of aviation innovation since its founding in 1925.

“Pratt & Whitney’s legacy spans general, commercial, and military aviation,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who oversees AirVenture’s attractions. “Displaying the 747SP at Oshkosh celebrates 100 years of their groundbreaking work, thrilling the over 500,000 attendees expected at the show.”
Since its start in 1925, Pratt & Whitney has shaped aviation. Its R-1340 Wasp engine transformed military and commercial flight. During the 1940s, the company powered key World War II aircraft and began exploring jet propulsion.
Today, it continues to innovate, with the 747SP testing engines like the PW800 for business jets and the advanced GTF engine for commercial fleets.

15 Year Presence at Oshkosh
Pratt & Whitney Canada, established in 1928, has been a fixture at EAA AirVenture for over 15 years. Its legendary PT6 engine, in service for more than 60 years, powers thousands of aircraft worldwide, from bush planes to business jets.
With over 500 million flying hours, the PT6 remains a gold standard for reliability and performance in turboprop propulsion.
Boeing 747SP “Special Performance” Variant
The Boeing 747SP, or “special performance” model, is a rare variant of the iconic 747 airliner. Built for extended range, it’s powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines.
Only 45 were ever made, and Pratt & Whitney owns the last two airworthy examples. The test bed version features a unique fifth engine mount, allowing engineers to test engines in real-world conditions. Since 2001, these test beds have conducted over 1,400 ground and flight tests with 71 experimental engines.
