Manchester Airport has prepared for a busy May half-term as it opens its brand-new security hall in Terminal 2.
This milestone marks a significant step in the airport’s £1.3 billion, decade-long transformation project, which is nearing completion.
Holidaymakers, especially families jetting off to sunny destinations, will be among the first to experience this state-of-the-art facility.
Manchester Airport’s Transformation
The transformation of Manchester Airport began in 2015, with the first major milestone achieved in 2021. This saw Terminal 2’s extension officially opened, doubling its capacity.
Since then, the older section of Terminal 2 has been revamped. This aligns it with the modern standards of the new extension.
The security hall’s opening follows the recent launch of the first check-in desks. It paves the way for the terminal’s full completion later this year. This will include a new departure lounge, additional shops, bars, and a second pier with extra gates.

New Security Hall
The new security hall features 10 advanced lanes, with five opening immediately. These lanes boast cutting-edge technology that will eventually allow passengers to keep electronics in their bags and carry larger liquid volumes.
However, for now, travellers are advised to follow standard security procedures to avoid confusion, as UK airports are adopting this technology at different paces.
The May half-term, from May 23 to June 1, is expected to be one of the busiest periods of the year, with over one million passengers passing through Manchester Airport.
Families are flocking to warm destinations, taking advantage of the school break. The following week, known as Whit Week, will also see high demand, particularly from families in Greater Manchester, where some schools take an additional holiday week.
This allows savvy travellers to book flights at near-term-time prices, boosting passenger numbers by another million.

Bargain-hunting wayfarers are heading to popular sunny spots during Whit Week. The top five non-connecting destinations are Antalya, Palma, Alicante, Dalaman, and Tenerife. These locations offer affordable escapes for families seeking sun and relaxation.
The new security hall is designed to handle the high volume of passengers efficiently, ensuring a smoother travel experience during peak times.
