On June 16, 2025, a significant milestone was achieved in the partnership between ITA Airways and Lufthansa Cargo.
Four ITA Airways flights departed from South America, carrying shipments managed by Lufthansa Cargo.
These flights took off from Buenos Aires (EZE, flight AZ 681), São Paulo (GRU, flights AZ 675 and AZ 679), and Rio de Janeiro (GIG, flight AZ 673).
They arrived at Rome-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) early on June 17, 2025. Lufthansa Cargo representatives and a team from Aeroporti di Roma warmly welcomed the aircraft.

Lufthansa-ITA Cargo Cooperation
This marks the first step in a growing collaboration. Lufthansa Cargo is now marketing freight capacity in the bellyhold of ITA Airways flights from these South American cities to Rome.
The shipments travel under Lufthansa Cargo’s air waybill (AWB) prefix. As a result, Rome has become Lufthansa Cargo’s fifth cargo hub in Europe, joining Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Brussels.

With regulatory approvals in place, Lufthansa Cargo plans to expand its marketing of ITA Airways’ freight capacity to include all continental and intercontinental routes.
The new Rome hub strengthens Lufthansa Cargo’s global network. It offers increased freight capacity and flexible transport solutions for businesses moving goods to and from Southern Europe and beyond.
This development aligns with Lufthansa Cargo’s mission of “Enabling Global Business” by providing reliable and efficient freight services worldwide.
One of Lufthansa Cargo’s key customers, JAS Worldwide, was quick to utilize the new routes. Founded in Milan, Italy, in 1978 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, JAS booked freight on the inaugural ITA Airways flight.
They also opted for Lufthansa Cargo’s “Sustainable Choice” add-on service. This service allows customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Since early 2025, the add-on has been available for all bellyhold capacities marketed by Lufthansa Cargo, not just cargo aircraft. Customers can book it online, ensuring a direct and measurable reduction in their carbon footprint during transport.
