As the aircraft approached the Brazilian coast on flight plan track for São Paulo, one of the pilots became incapacitated.
As a result, the decision was made to make a precautionary diversion to nearby Recife, Brazil. The flight subsequently landed at Recife Airport (REC).

Flight data shows that Azul flight AD8803 had departed from Porto Airport at 1:21 PM local time on 25 July.
Following departure, the flight had set course normally, climbing to flight level FL380 for the south westerly service to Brazil.
The aircraft was approaching the Brazilian coast at cruising altitude when the decision to divert was made.
The flight spent approximately 1.5 hours on the ground at Recife before continuing to the scheduled destination São Paulo Campinas Viracopos International Airport.
The airline subsequently released a confirming statement, saying that the aircraft diverted to Recife for medical support for one of the crew members.
The aircraft conducting the AD8803 service from Porto was an Airbus A330-900, registered PR-ANX. This is a 5.6 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier Azul Linhas Aereas.
