Could airports help aliens find Earth? New research suggests that radar systems used by civilian airports and military operations might be unintentionally revealing Earth’s existence to advanced alien civilizations.

These signals, used to track aircraft, create a combined radio output of approximately 2×10^15 watts. This energy is strong enough to be detected by advanced radio telescopes, similar to the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, if they exist on distant worlds within 200 light-years.
To understand this leakage, researchers simulated how radar signals spread through space over time. They focused on nearby stars, such as Barnard’s Star and AU Microscopii, to assess how visible Earth’s signals would be.
The results suggest that these signals could act as a beacon. They effectively announce our presence to any advanced civilization with the technology to detect them.
Military Radar: A Cosmic Lighthouse
Military radar systems, which are more focused and directional, produce a unique pattern that resembles a lighthouse beam sweeping across the sky. These systems emit a peak power of about 1×10^14 watts in specific directions.
According to Caisse Saide, this signal would appear “clearly artificial” to any extraterrestrial observers equipped with powerful telescopes.
Depending on their position in space, these observers could detect military radar signals up to 100 times stronger than other emissions.
This distinctive signature makes radar systems a potential “technosignature”—a universal marker of intelligent life.
Any planet with advanced technology and a complex aviation system could produce similar signals, making radar emissions a key target in the search for extraterrestrial civilizations.
Implications for Science and Technology
The research offers valuable insights beyond the search for alien life. Professor Michael Garrett, a co-researcher at the University of Manchester, explains that understanding how our signals travel through space can improve how we manage Earth’s radio spectrum.
This knowledge could enhance communication systems, refine radar technology, and even support planetary defence efforts.
For example, the methods used to model these weak signals can help astronomers monitor space debris or track potential threats like asteroids.
